This is the first post about my vacation in New York City. One night we went out for some drinks in a very special bar. We walked along Chinatown until we reached Doyers Street, a street with its very own history in NY. We were standing in front of a Chinese restaurant, its name is Golden Flower Restaurant, but when you enter the door, you feel like you have traveled through time and space.
Apotheke is a bar influenced by the late 19th century in Paris. Absinthe plays a big role, and herbs, fruits, and a very cool style. That is the about on Apotheke’s website and it describes it perfectly:
“At Apotheke, the presentation of a cocktail is just as dramatic as the cocktail itself. The bar is no longer a bar. It’s a stage. A chemistry lab. A theater. A unique-shaped Austrian crystal glass is carefully chosen for each cocktail, and into it is poured a beautiful, jewel-colored liquid. This is much more than a cocktail bar – this is a cocktail apothecary.”
So poetic, but so true. It is definitively a place to visit when you are in New York. Incomparable with anything I have ever seen before.
The interior, the glasses, the drinks, the staff, the band – everything is chosen so carefully and presented in this very special way. Damn, it was a great night. But be careful! It is not a bar to get wasted, one cocktail is about 16 dollar. But it is totally worth it. It is an experience you are not able to do very often.
I had a ‘Hemingway Special’, a rum cocktail with sugar-cane juice and mint – a liquid delight.
The Swing, Jazz, Chanson band was epic. The combination of string bass, trumpet, guitar, drums and vocals was relaxed but also thrilling at the same time.
If you happen to be in New York, be sure to go there, the atmosphere, the interior – it is such a special thing. Check out this video to get a deeper insight into Apotheke.
